It owns operating businesses, and builds the institutions that form the people who run them.

Five principles:

Humility Judgment belongs to the work. Rank and reputation do not.

Responsibility Full accountability for the outcome. No deflection, no partial claim.

Integrity The standard remains identical when it is unobserved.

Fortitude Maintaining the standard after novelty and recognition have gone.

Prudence The disciplined selection of the right action in the concrete case.

These are formed under sustained pressure until they become reliable. The institution remains patient with undeveloped capability and exacting about character.

Ownership of the whole is retained without term. Equity is extended only after successive demonstrations of character, competence, and judgment. Every operating company is required to set the standard in its field, and mediocrity is treated as failure of the structure itself. Expansion occurs solely when people already formed to these principles can be placed in positions of real authority. Anything beyond that capacity is declined.

This is judged one generation out. If the operating companies still set the standard in their fields, and control has passed to people who earned it inside them rather than to buyers or heirs, the structure held.
